The foundations of the world food systems are based on grains and livestock.  Plants, therefore, play a pivotal role.  Most food is made from a dozen or so plants, most notably wheat, barley, oats and maize.  Grass is also an important crop for utilisation by livestock.

Crops depend on good soil condition thereby supplying water and nutrients.  They also need carbon dioxide from the air and energy from sunlight.

With the global population predicted to reach 9.5 billion by the year 2100 the growing of crops must reach a new plateau.
