Maize

Maize is a relatively simple crop to grow but there are a number of key decisions to be made to deliver a successful high yielding crop.

  • Site
A suitable site is probably the most important consideration when growing maize as it is an expensive crop to grow and good yields are essential.
  • Varieties
Variety selection is critical to produce a successful high yielding crop. As a general rule, it is best to use varieties on the Recommended List as they are proven under Irish conditions. If sowing >10 acres or sowing in different fields it is recommended to use more than one variety. Use varieties suited for less favourable sites if sowing is delayed or where early harvest is required (these varieties will mature earlier). Under plastic grow varieties suitable for sowing under plastic.
